12 Practical Tips for First-Time Spa-Goers in Istanbul

22 September 2026 · 7 min read

Going to a spa for the first time is both exciting and a little uncertain for many people. What should I wear, when should I arrive, what should I tell the therapist, should I go into the hammam first? If you are planning your first spa experience in Istanbul, these questions are completely natural. In this article, based on the questions we hear most often from guests at O’SPA’s centre in Skyland Istanbul, we have put together 12 practical tips that will help you from booking to after your session.

Your First Spa Experience in Istanbul: Before the Appointment

The gold-detailed reception area of O'SPA Skyland Istanbul

1. Choose a classic massage to start

For a first experience, rather than a very intense or long treatment, it is a good idea to choose a balanced session that lets you get to know your body and your preferences. The 50-minute Swedish Massage (4,600 ₺, 20% VAT included) is an ideal start in this respect: it is applied with medium pressure and flowing movements and offers an overall feeling of relaxation. It then becomes a solid reference point for moving on to options such as Deep Tissue or Volcanic Hot Stone.

2. Book your appointment in advance

Rather than turning up unannounced, booking in advance both secures a time that suits you and allows the team to prepare for you. You can easily make an appointment through our booking page or our WhatsApp line (+90 539 675 76 76). Since O’SPA is open every day from 09:00 to 23:00, after-work hours are also among the options.

3. Share your health situation

Be sure to mention conditions such as pregnancy, a chronic condition, a recent injury or operation, allergies or skin sensitivity when booking or before the session. In such cases we recommend consulting your doctor first. Open communication is the first step towards the session being safely planned for you.

4. Read up on what you are curious about

You can find answers to most questions on practical matters such as clothing, payment and cancellation on our Frequently Asked Questions page. Being informed in advance removes the small questions that would otherwise occupy your mind on the day. If there is something you cannot find an answer to, feel free to ask our team.

When You Arrive at the Spa

5. Arrive 10–15 minutes early

Arriving early lets you complete check-in without rushing, change and calm down for a few minutes. It is worth setting off a little early to allow for Istanbul traffic. Since O’SPA offers guests a free indoor car park, those arriving by car do not waste time looking for a parking space.

6. Do not come after a heavy meal

A heavy meal eaten just before the session can cause discomfort while lying face down on the massage table. Eating something light an hour or two before your appointment is usually the most comfortable option. Likewise, not having too much caffeine right before the session makes it easier to unwind; choose a few glasses of water instead.

7. Leave your valuables at home

If possible, leaving jewellery, watches and similar items at home saves you the trouble of taking them off and putting them back on, and makes it easier to focus your mind fully on resting.

8. Put your phone on silent

One of the most valuable parts of a spa experience is being able to disconnect from the outside world for a short while. Putting your phone on silent or switching it off lets you fully enjoy the quiet offered by the soundproofed massage suites. Emails and messages can wait until the session is over; this short time belongs only to you.

During and After the Session

9. Talk openly with your therapist

Do not hesitate to say if the pressure feels too strong or too light, if you feel sensitivity in an area or if the room temperature bothers you. Our internationally certified therapists adapt the session to your feedback; it is also perfectly normal to say that you would prefer not to talk during the session.

10. Try the sauna and hammam gradually

If you are trying the Finnish dry sauna, the steam room or the traditional hammam with its marble navel stone for the first time, start with short periods, listen to your body and cool down in between. In cases such as blood pressure issues, cardiovascular conditions or pregnancy, consult your doctor before exposure to high heat. If you would like to see the areas of our centre in advance, take a look at our facility page.

11. Do not rush after the session

Jumping up straight after the massage and heading directly into traffic can cause you to lose part of the relaxation you have gained right away. Enjoy the herbal tea served to you in the relax lounge and rest for a few more minutes.

12. Drink plenty of water and note how you feel

Drinking enough water throughout the day after the session feels good. Briefly noting how you feel the next day also makes your next choice easier: was the pressure right, which area needed more attention, would you like to try a different type of massage?

A Short Checklist for Your First Spa Day

  • Have your appointment time and chosen service been confirmed?
  • Is there any information about your health that you need to share?
  • Have you planned a light meal and enough water?
  • Are your valuables at home and your phone on silent?
  • Have you set aside time to rest after the session?

Finally, we would like to remind you of this: your first experience does not have to be perfect. Perhaps you will notice that you would like slightly lighter pressure, or that you would rather try the hammam after the massage than before. All these discoveries are a natural part of the process. With each visit you will get to know your body a little better and be able to choose your next session more consciously according to your own needs. Many of our guests also see the first session as an introduction and build their real routine over the following visits. Be patient with yourself, do not hesitate to ask about anything you are curious about, and experience this time as a break that belongs only to you.
